Very Large Ornate Gold Leafed Antique Amercian Frame American c. 1870's Magnificent heavily carved gold leafed frame. Crafted of delicately carved "compo" (composition) on wood and gilded, the frame has a guilloche outer edge and inner moulding with laurel leaf and berry. On the outer moulding and continuous acanthus leaf motif on the center band with crossed ribbon centers and strap corners. The design and craftsmanship heralds the return to Naturalism from the excessive Rococo style that had been popular in the mid-1800's.
